The Story of What we Carry Beneath the Surface.

A teacher asked their students “ if you were carrying a cup of coffee and somebody bumps you and you spilled the coffee why did you spill coffee?”

The students answered, that’s pretty obvious-  it’s a chain reaction. When bumped it spills as your shoulder is attached to your arm, which is attached to your hand where the coffee is and coffee spills out.

The teacher responded, “no the reason that you spilled coffee is because you had coffee in your cup so if we had milk, it would’ve been milk if we had water, it would’ve been water. If you were carrying frustration you would have spilled frustration. If you were carrying anger, it would’ve been anger. These things which are just below the surface for us have a way of peeking out when we least expect it. We may think we have released something, and realistically, we have only pushed it down.

This happened to me recently as I was leaving a meeting. My frustration grew during the meeting, as it did not go as I thought it would. Instead of acknowledging my feelings in that moment, I let it fester. After the meeting, it came out and effected a loved one. If I had acknowledged my feelings and frustration, honestly, I likely would have laughed about it. However, in not doing so, I lit it on fire! I ended up wanting to apologize, and did.

I would rather carry a little happiness in my cup some peace, some love, some humor and then if something comes out it will be that as opposed to what happened to me. Something which could have an adverse effect on me and my situation. I hope you consider this for yourself.
