The Story of the Potatoes, Eggs and Tea

The Story of the Potatoes, eggs and tea.

A daughter was frustrated as her life seemed to be because one stressful situation after another. Stressors were nonstop and she couldn’t move beyond all of these life pressures. She was frustrated.

Her mother asked her to join her in the kitchen. She proceeded to place three pots of water on the stove. In one pot she put potatoes. In the second pot she put eggs. In the third pot she put tea. She boiled them all for 20 minutes and then pulled them out and put them in separate bowls. The daughter was cautiously optimistic and asked “what’s this about?”

The mother asked “what do you see?” The daughter said: “I see potatoes, I see eggs, and I see tea.” The  mother asked her to look more closely. She asked her to pick up the potato and press it between her fingers.  She did, and it fell apart. Next she asked her to pick up the egg and do the same. She picked up the egg, and cracked the shell. The inside was a hardened center. Lastly, she said go to the tea. The tea was very different. It smelled wonderful, and changed the water. She tasted it and it was delicious. The daughter asked “what’s this about?”

All of these things were presented the same stimulus the same environment and each one responded very very differently, the potato started hard and became soft and weak. The egg which started fragile became hardened. The tea infused into the environment. It changed the environment that it was in.

The mother continued- We have choices as to how we react to stressors in our lives. We can show resistance and become beaten down or hardened. Or we can leverage the circumstances and learn from them. Thereby, growing and changing self and the environment.

When considering our circumstances, and how we react to any stimulus and our environment … choose carefully.
