The Road Not Taken or as many know it: “The Road Less Traveled”, is a poem written by Robert Frost some years ago. It has many interpretations and is a favorite of mine. Let’s interpret it using the concept of energy interpretation. I want to substitute the word “energy” for “road”, therefore, it becomes “The Energy Less Traveled.”
A main passage in the story is “two roads diverge in a yellow wood.” He was faced with a choice of which way he would travel. Although the choice is seemingly innocuous, the direction could certainly make a difference in his future. He took the road which had less wear and wanted the traveler. In our society today, we are inundated with anxiety, fear, and these things knock us off balance. We do not need to choose this well trodden path.
We have energies which we can interpret. Which gives us a choice. We choose our energy. We choose how we interact with our environment. We choose the next step in our day. We choose our energetic path.
Here is an example: years ago when I was an actor on stage, I was waiting backstage for my entrance. Moments before I went on, I felt a real influx, a big wash of energy. It was like a carrot dangling in front of me. Except there were two things hanging in front of me, a carrot and an ear of corn (I hate corn). I knew that I had a choice. At that moment I knew the difference and it was profound. I had a choice of eating that terrible cobb of corn and metaphorically spitting it out in front of the audience, or choosing the tasty carrot. I could choose peace, confidence and enjoyment, or fear. The path of corn, and fear, could lead me to being stressed out and forgetting my lines. The path of the carrot, could lead me to using that energy to propel me into my character on stage. With good fortune, I chose the latter -and, in Robert Frost’s words, “it made all the difference.”
That possibility exists for all of us, every day and every moment. From moment to moment we have energy, which is coming at us from lots of different directions, from people and even from ourselves. You needn’t look any further than a recent decision. We have a choice how we interpret that energy!
As you read this consider where your energy is. Are you anxious? Are you content? Somewhere inbetween? Now, consider, how you WANT to be. Remove harm to others, and take that path!
Obviously, there are reasons for us feeling the way we do. I do not suggest ignoring our feelings. However, even with these experiences we may have, we STILL interpret it and choose our direction. Some introspection is always good. Dragging ourselves through the coals, maybe not so good. As the saying goes “Let that shit go.” Be strategic with your choice of positive vs. negative. And again, no harm to others.
Choose the right path, and not to look back and say that was the energy not taken with regret. Instead, choose the energy with intent and you can say “it made all the difference.”
